abstract = "This report presents the methodological procedure, in development
at INPE, to identify and to map, through digital processing of
TM/Landsat images, the deforested areas in tropical forest
formations. These areas compose one of the information layers of
the database for Brazilian Amazon (www.obt.inpe.br/prodes). The
Spectral Linear Mixing Model, implemented in the Processing of
Georeferenced Information System (SPRING), by transforming the
original bands TM3 (0.63-0.69 m), TM4 (0.76-0.90 m) and TM5
(1.55-1.75 m), in fraction image of shade, vegetation and soil,
has been selected to execute this task of discrimination of the
deforested areas (Digital PRODES Project). Image segmentation
based on growing regions and classification techniques applied to
shade, soil and vegetation fraction images have been allowing the
automation for mapping the deforested areas (recent and old). In
order to illustrate the methodological procedure, a region was
selected in the Par{\'a} state covered by TM/Landsat images WRS
227/62. A technical quality gain for the scientific community, who
deal with environmental aspects of the country, is achieved in
this work through the facility to use SPRING (Georeferenced
Information Processing System) software, the adopted
methodological procedure and the series of possible information
that can be stored in this geographic database. SPRING Main
Features: An integrated GIS for environmental, socio-economical
and urban planning applications. a multi-platform system,
including support for Windows95/98/NT, Linux and Solaris, a widely
accessible freeware for the GIS community with a quick learning
curve, to be a mechanism of diffusion of the knowledge developed
for the INPE and its partners with the introduction of new
algorithms and methodologies. RESUMEN: Este documento muestra el
procedimiento metodol{\'o}gico desarrollado por el INPE, para
identificar y mapear, mediante el procesamiento digital de
im{\'a}genes TM/Landsat, las {\'a}reas deforestadas en
formaciones boscosas tropicales. Estas {\'a}reas componen uno de
los planos de informaci{\'o}n del Banco de Datos para la
Amaz{\^o}nia Brasileņa (www.obt.inpe.br/prodes). El Modelo Linear
de Mezcla Espectral, implementado en el Sistema de Processamento
de Informa{\c{c}}{\~o}es Georreferenciadas (SPRING), transforma
las bandas originales TM3 (0,63-0,69 m), TM4 (0,76-0,90 m) y TM5
(1,55-1,75 m) en las im{\'a}genes fracci{\'o}n sombra,
vegetaci{\'o}n y suelo, y ha sido seleccionado para realizar la
funci{\'o}n de discriminar las {\'a}reas deforestadas (Proyecto
PRODES Digital). T{\'e}cnicas de segmentaci{\'o}n por
crecimiento de regiones y clasificaci{\'o}n de las im{\'a}genes
fracci{\'o}n sombra, suelo y vegetaci{\'o}n han permitido la
automatizaci{\'o}n de la cartograf{\'{\i}}a de {\'a}reas
deforestadas (recientes y antiguas). Para ilustrar el
procedimiento metodol{\'o}gico, fue seleccionada una regi{\'o}n
en el estado de Para, cubierta por las im{\'a}genes TM/Landsat,
{\'o}rbita 227 punto 62. Con este trabajo la comunidad
cient{\'{\i}}fica nacional, relacionada con los problemas
ambientales, amplia y alcanza nuevas posibilidades en la
soluci{\'o}n de sus tareas a trav{\'e}s de las facilidades de
operaci{\'o}n del SPRING, del procedimiento metodol{\'o}gico
adoptado, adem{\'a}s de las informaciones plausibles de ser
almacenadas en este Banco de Datos Geogr{\'a}ficos.

aplicaciones ambientales, planificaci{\'o}n urbana y
socioecon{\'o}mica. Un sistema multiplataforma, incluyendo los
sistemas operativos Windows95/98/NT, Linux y Solaris. Un
{"}freeware{"} extensamente accesible para la comunidad GIS con
una curva r{\'a}pida de aprendizaje. Un mecanismo de
difusi{\'o}n del conocimiento desarrollado por el INPE y sus
colaboradores a trav{\'e}s de la introducci{\'o}n de nuevos
